BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY 

The emergence of globalization in the political, social, economic, and technological developments has a significant impact on the communal and organizational life of society's members. In tandem with these developments, the management of organizations are obligated to adopt new management techniques in organization to contend with the intensifying rivalry. Utilizing the power of communication, the majority of these modern management techniques strive to improve employee performance (Erogluer, 2011). Communications began with the beginning of the cosmos. There was no start that lacked communication. Consequently, communication supports the evolution of human society. Communication is a multifaceted phenomena that has varied meanings for many individuals. It is a method for gaining access to the mind or idea of another individual. According to Wilson (1997), communication may also be seen as a decrease of ambiguity; hence, communication is a meaning exchange.

Accordingly, communication is very essential for organizations and humans as social beings, since its advantages and negatives are inseparable parts of life, and it plays a crucial role in all actions aimed at achieving organizational objectives (Ada et al., 2008). Due to the importance of this characteristic to organizational performance, organizational communication has been the subject of study in organizational behaviour research. Effective communication has been demonstrated to increase job satisfaction (Holtzhausen, 2002), which in turn increases productivity (Litterst & Eyo, 1982). Communication also increases employee job performance, according to research (Goris, 2007), but bad communication leads in low employee loyalty to the organization (Kramer, 1999).

Chen et al. (2006) noted that studies on employee satisfaction with the communication process is scarce. Since communication incorporates diverse organizational units and activities, it is necessary to investigate the link between organizational communication and employee performance. Communication is the human activity that creates relationships between individuals (Duncan & Moriaty, 1998). This indicates that people interact with one another via communication. It is the glue that holds an organization's members together. Historically, managers have spent the bulk of their time communicating in some way (face-to-face discussion, memos, notice boards, mass meeting, employees hand book, public lectures, e.t.c). Today, however, more and more workers realize that communication, which is the mutual exchange of understanding that leads to effective and efficient work performance in an organization because it is the essence of management, is an important aspect of their work. Without efficient communication, the essential responsibilities of management (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling) cannot be conducted effectively. Different units exist inside an organization, and it is via communication that they interact to achieve organizational objectives.

In contrast, Workers Performance refers to an employee's ability to carry out his or her responsibilities for a particular organization. By establishing and clearly communicating performance standards and expectations, watching and offering feedback, and performing evaluations, it is possible to get the greatest outcomes via employee performance management. According to Bass (1985), workers do duties because they identify with their managers or the organization's functions and objectives. This interaction results in the workers' fundamental agreement with the performance standards. Thus, the flow of communication can facilitate workers' internalization of an organization's desirable values, such as its goals and objectives. However, improved performance is only possible when there is a suitable degree of expectation-fit and when the social interchange between managers and workers is fair and equitable. Wang (2005). From the standpoint of human resource management, it has frequently been believed that the knowledge, talents, and skills of newly recruited employees will allow them to be effective workers. Therefore, management must tailor its rules and objectives to ensure that workers do their given duties. We live in a time when communication systems are quickly expanding, which is crucial for the success and expansion of an organization and is continuously asked to play a larger role in the pursuit of economic and political stability. Effective workplace performance is the key to an organization's success, and the efficacy of the workers hired will define the organization's level of success. Effective communication between employees‟ and managers is crucial in that employees will need to know what is expected of them, managers will need to provide a clear job description for every employee which would make employees have immediate access to the necessary tools to complete each assignment given to them. Communication encompasses all management workers to improve employee performance. In light of the aforementioned, this study focuses on the impact of communication efficiency on the performance of workers within an organization.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

Despite the aforementioned numerous benefits of effective communication, global business is currently extremely difficult. To remain profitable in the extremely challenging and competitive global market economy, all production factors (i.e., people, machinery, method, market, money, and materials) must be prudently managed. The human resource represents the greatest challenge among production factors because, unlike other inputs, employee management necessitates the deft manipulation of thoughts, feelings, and emotions to ensure maximum productivity. Organizational communication plays an essential role in overcoming this obstacle. The inability of a company's leaders or managers to coordinate a perfect and seamless flow of communication interaction between employees and the outside business environment is likely to result in low worker productivity and a high degree of boredom and disorganization. However, individuals interpret and comprehend messages differently. In communication, there are several types of unwanted interference that may distort a message and remain a constant danger to good communication since they can compromise the correctness of a message being sent (Koontz 2001).

Similarly, organizations in Nigeria have been confronted with a variety of obstacles to their development, such as misuse of cash and resources, poor leadership skills, a low level of actual income, and inadequate organization facilities, to name a few. In this context, this research evaluates the impact of communication efficiency on the performance, productivity, and overall commitment of workers in an organization.

1.3     OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The broad objective of this study was to examine the effect of communication efficiency on workers performance in an organisation. The specific objective included:

i. To determine the extent to which communication in the organization is efficient. 

ii. To determine the impact of efficient communication on workers commitment.

iii. To examine effect of communication efficiency on workers output.

iv. To determine the extent to which communication efficiency influences workers overall performance.

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following are some of the questions which this study intends to answer:

  1. What is the extent to which communication in the organization is efficient?
  2. Does communication efficiency have an impact on workers commitment?
  3. Does communication efficiency have an effect on workers output?
  4. What is the extent to which communication efficiency influences workers overall performance?

1.5   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study investigated the effect of communication efficiency on the performance of employees; therefore, managers and boards of directors of organizations seeking to improve their knowledge will find this study useful, as they will not want to experience the same misfortune before implementing the proposed solution.

In addition, future scholars will use it as a literature review. This implies that other students who may desire to do research in this field will be able to use this work as a source of literature for critical analysis. Invariably, the findings of this research add significantly to the corpus of academic knowledge about the influence of communication efficiency on the performance of Nigerian workers.

1.6   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is structured to generally examine the effect of communication efficiency on workers performance in an organisation. However, the study will further determine the extent to which communication in the organization is efficient; determine the impact of efficient communication on workers commitment; examine effect of communication efficiency on workers output; and determine the extent to which communication efficiency influences workers overall performance.

The study will be delimited to ANAMMCO, Enugu State.

1.7 Limitation Of The Study

Like in every human endeavour, the researcher encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the researcher simultaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

1.8 Definition Of Terms

The following terms defined are used in the study to enhance easy understanding.

Organization: This refers to a group of persons who come together to form a business, club, etc in order achieve a particular aim or goal.

Management: This refers to the procedures involved in planning organization, directing staffing, controlling of the various resources of an organizations with the aim of maximizing benefits.

Communication: This refers to the process by which information is passed through one person or group of persons to the other, through the means of previously agreed symbols.

Employee: a person employed for wages or salary, especially at nonexecutive level.

Performance: the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function.

Productivity: the effectiveness of productive effort, especially in industry, as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input.
